Using iPod touches

Well we started off with one iPod touch in class and the kids really enjoyed using it.  I found it quite difficult to use with a group and fully utilise the apps as it was small so isn't ideal for lots of children to sit around.  Also I often had to rotate it between group members so everyone got a chance to use it.  So I applied to First Credit Union for sponsorship of some more iPod touches.  They kindly donated 4.  We now have 1 pod of 3 and 1 pod of 2.  It has been great to have 3 in class.

The apps that I have been using frequently are math magician, splice, blogger and spelling games focusing on homophones, plurals and tenses.

Tia has become our blogger app expert.  She has started to ask to use the iPod to do blog posts throughout the day.  Tia has also taught a few other children to use the app.  It will be great when all the iPods are connected to the wifi so more children can use this app.  i could see this as a math activity for a group.

Splice is great too.  The enviro-agents took videos on the iPod for their application for a treemendous makeover.  We then put the videos onto splice.  Fingers crossed the application is successful.

So because we now have 3 iPods I am now more able to include the ipods into independent activities and group rotations for my reading, writing and maths groups.  I'm really excited about exploring this mobile learning device.

  1. Hi Asri
I have also found that a pod of 3 iPods has been so much better than one. We are so lucky that Credit Union donated 4 iPods! Have we thanked them yet?
The apps you are using sound great. I must use the spelling apps more during reading, spelling and writing time.
My chn are hooked into creating movies on them at the moment so I must remind them there are other things to do on them during their 'free time". Including them in maths programmes etc is a great way to introduce new things/apps etc.
All the Ipods are now connected to our wifi and my class are loving using safari to research info for their reading projects.
Are you finding all your chn are having equal access to using the iPods? This is something I need to ensure happens in my class.

    1. Hi Marcelle
The kids are in the process of making a glogster for first credit union which we will send to them, and also put into the school newsletter. Could you please take some photos of your children using the ipods and photos of your ipod activities e.g. a scene from a puppetpal? Was thinking of asking the class what they enjoy about having the ipods and how they help them learn to put on the glogster as well.

I haven't used safari with my class yet. We are currently learning to use the splice, fotobabble, VT and Blogger apps so that is keeping us very busy. Trying to train "experts" to teach the rest of the class. So far Brooke is our splice exppert, Tia our blogger expert and also our fotobabble expert. It's quite difficult as there are so many steps for them to remember so next week I must get them to write it in the techsperx book.

I'm juggling the student use ok at the moment. It's great having 3 because I can set it as a group rotation or follow up activity. I like how your students independently seek out to use them. I think once my class use them more frequently and get a better understanding of the apps they will independently seek to use them.

Maybe this Wednesday we could share apps so I can put them onto our account and synch the ipods.
